If he gets another one from a map object, the usual message about receiving an artifact appears, but the artifact itself is gone forever. A hero with all 14 slots filled cannot pick up more artifacts. They need to be dug up, and disappear instead of being looted when the Hero is defeated. Ultimate Artifacts are another exception. Sorceresses and Warlocks have it by default, while Knights and Barbarians can buy it from a Mage Guild. Winning a battle against a town, a castle, or an enemy Hero is worth additional 500 exp (applies only once, battle against a Hero in a castle still gives 500, not 1000). The exceptions are trolls and cyclops, which are both worth 60 experience points for some unknown reason. So a peasant is worth 1 point and a dragon is worth 200 points. 1 point is gained for 1 hit point of a defeated unit. Experience can be gained by winning battles. Each Hero starts at level 1 and gains further levels when he gathers enough experience. Experience Experience determines when Heroes level up.
